Mauricio Carra is the head Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor at The Cellar Gym.
Originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil; Mauricio has been teaching Jiu-Jitsu since 2001. He received his black belt in 2007 under Leo Vieira and currently holds a 3rd degree black belt under the Checkmat affiliation. Mauricio has an extensive competition resume dating back to 1999, most recently taking double Gold in the Gi and No-Gi divisions at the 2016 IBJJF Austin International Open World Championships and winning gold at the NABJJF Los Angeles International Jiu Jitsu Open Championships. He also has competed Mixed Martial arts and has worked with many professional MMA fighters.
Mauricio moved to the U.S with his wife, Vanessa and son. Mauricio was named head instructor of the Jiu Jitsu program at The Cellar Gym in Spring 2017. Outside of work he enjoys fishing, biking, motocross, snowboarding, water skiing, swimming, surfing and Brazilian BBQ. Mauricio also has a degree in Physical Education from Pontificia University Catholic the Campinas SP.
Teaching style: Mauricio has a versatile and adaptable teaching style. He is always trying to notice the common mistakes and the positions that students are making during class. He uses this insight to rework the technique and find a better way of teaching so that everyone understands and get better.
